Wednesday 17 November 2021

10.00am - 11.00am (AEDT)

Melburnians are rediscovering their love for urban parks.

Throughout the extended COVID lockdowns in Melbourne in 2020 and 2021, recreation options have been limited and people are turning to parks to spend time in nature. On weekend days, thousands of people are visiting many of Parks Victoria’s urban parks, including Jells Park, Westerfolds Park, Wattle Park and Brimbank Park. Playgrounds are full, trails are busy and people are reconnecting with the great outdoors.

This increase in visitation is happening alongside the Victorian Government’s $154 million investment to deliver the Suburban Parks Program, reinforcing Melbourne’s status as the parks capital of Australia.  Under this program Parks Victoria is leading the planning for three new regional parks in Melbourne’s outer suburbs of Werribee, Deanside and Clyde.  New infrastructure is also being planned for a range of parks including Wattle Park, Werribee River Park and Plenty Gorge Park.

This presentation will address the rise in park visitation, the challenges of managing parks during COVID, the development of new parks for new outer urban communities and the future of Metropolitan Regional Parks
