Creating Sustainable Open Spaces

Using Compost to Deliver Livability, Sustainability, Recreation and Economic Outcomes

Dr Paul Lamble has over 15 years experience in the water industry. This experience encompasses local, and state government as well as private consulting work.

Paul has had a long standing passion for water management, particularly the effective and efficient use of water in delivering services for the community. This passion can be traced back to when Paul lived on an irrigation property in northern Victoria and worked with a local consultant in the Murray Valley and Goulburn Valley Irrigation Districts.

Paul's previous roles include:

  • Senior Sustainable Living Officer (Water Programs) - Lake Macquarie City Council
  • Senior Consultant, Sustainability Services- MWH (now part of Stantec)
  • Consultant, GHD
  • Advisor, Victorian Shadow Minister for the Environment

In the presentation we cover:

  • The challenges facing open green spaces from climate change to playing surface conditions and usage levels;
  • How compost can be used to make open spaces sustainable;
  • A comparison of fields with compost amended soils versus unamended soils including:
  • Drought resilience;
  • Carrying capacity;
  • Water demands; and
  • Lifecycle costs (which also compares synthetic fields).
