Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) calls on the Australian Government to prioritise investment in delivering greener places and healthier communities in our cities and regions to improve the health of Australians and to become climate resilient places.

COVID19 has shown us that the community values our green open spaces and protecting, enhancing, and extending them should be a priority of the Australian Government.

PLA continues to be concerned about the poor health of our nation.

In a letter to the Australian Government, PLA “calls to action” the Australian Government to partner with state and local governments in our urgent and collective response to this health crisis.

After 10 years at the helm of Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA), Mark Band will be stepping down as CEO of the National Association as of 30 June 2022.

Mark has led PLA through what has been the toughest and most trying of periods our industry has faced over the last few years. He has made an incredibly valuable contribution to PLA and, his wealth of experience and expertise in the Parks and Leisure sector coupled with his strategic vision has built the organisation to what it is today. Mark will be greatly missed.

PLA has certainly come a long way since it first started as the ‘Victorian Tree Planters Association in 1926 and today is recognised by all levels of Government and industry as the peak body supporting the ‘people behind the places.’

On behalf of the PLA team and all members, I’d like to personally thank Mark for his outstanding leadership and service to our organisation and the wider sector. We look forward to having Mark remain involved with PLA and seeing his continued service to the industry.

Whilst we navigate this change at National office, you can still contact your region Executive Officers and National Office staff as per usual. PLA is committed to representing, advocating, supporting, and servicing all professionals and organisations involved in the parks and leisure sector and we look forward to bringing the “Toward 2025” strategic plan to life through a new sustainable future, that continues to service the needs of our members, partners and industry.

Les Munn

PLA National President

ANNOUNCEMENT: PLA2022 Early Bird registration now open!
After two years of COVID-19 interruptions, Parks and Leisure Australia invites you to Centrepiece at Melbourne Park for our annual national conference 16 – 19 October.

This year’s theme is Grassroots, Where It Starts.

Because the origins of our Association have been cemented in parks and leisure administration since 1926 and the metaphor ‘grassroots’, and where ‘it’ all begins, celebrates the foundation of everything we do.

Using this connection, ‘grassroots’ reflects the basic outcomes of parks and recreation to provide health, activity, socialisation and environmental settings, as well as where sporting elite performance has its start.

This will be our first national face-to-face gathering since 2019 so join us as we return to grassroots.
