First Regional Victorian Seniors Exercise Park

Regional Victoria's first Seniors Exercise Park (specialised outdoor exercise equipment for older people) was opened on 8 February in Ballarat. Situated at Mt Pleasant Reserve, the exercise park is an important part of Council's vision to become an age friendly community and allows older adults to engage in physical programs while also enjoying social interaction with others. The City of Ballarat partnered with one of PLA's industry partners, the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) to install the innovative site.

The Ballarat installation is an ENJOY MAP for HEALTH project, which also has installations at Ivanhoe Park (Banyule), Central Park (Wyndham), and Barry Road Park (Whittlesea). The project is a partnership between the councils, NARI, and Lark Industries, and is part funded through the State Trustees Foundation of Australia.

The ENJOY MAP for HEALTH project aims to evaluate the impact of the Seniors Exercise Parks and associated capacity building activities, on park visitation, park-based physical activity by older people, and delivery of community physical activity programs.

Professor Briony Dow, Director of the National Ageing Research Institute, opens the installation.

The equipment will be very popular with the elderly residents of Ballarat.
