Based at our Parks and Gardens depot in Sale this role will see you working in the best regional Botanical Garden in Victoria in the Middle of Everywhere. This is an opportunity to make a positive contribution to the planning and operation of an outstanding community asset.

The successful candidate will have experience working in public garden estates/botanic gardens and/or curation of living collections. Experience in a specialist area of interest to the Botanic Gardens e.g. living collection curation, nursery functions maintenance of horticultural assets, irrigation and/or arboriculture will be highly regarded.

We are looking for someone with well-developed technical skills including outstanding plant knowledge, who is capable of managing the Gardens Living Collections and ensuring they are presented to a high level whilst being able to liaise with the Friends Group of volunteers and members of the general public.

The Senior Horticulturalist is responsible for leading a small team of horticulturalists and volunteers to achieve agreed outcomes in the provision of a variety of horticultural works programs. This position has a high level of autonomy, so the successful applicant needs to be motivated, enthusiastic, and reliable.

This role requires someone with an eye for detail, a genuine commitment to quality outcomes, outstanding communication ability and strong leadership skills. In addition to this a sound knowledge of horticulture combined with project delivery ability is essential.  Applicants should possess a minimum Certificate IV in Horticulture and be able to demonstrate relevant leadership experience. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate how they meet the criteria below:

  • A relevant qualification in Horticulture (Cert IV minimum, AOF level V diploma or above preferred).
  • Ability to manage own time, problem solve, set priorities, plan and organise work to meet predefined objectives.
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about developing gardens with the ability to develop and implement a range of horticultural maintenance programs.
  • Have a keen eye for detail and demonstrated experience in management & development of living collections including the coordination of operational maintenance, curation & development of public gardens to a high standard.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to direct and assist others in maintenance work as a member of a team in a cooperative manner.
