Hamilton City Council

The story of Hamilton Gardens is fascinating: from early beginnings as a quarry and go-cart track to an award-winning public garden and the Waikato’s most popular visitor attraction.

The work and dedication to get Hamilton Gardens to this point has been phenomenal. Now we’re on the hunt for a new inspirational leader to take the reins and continue the legacy of our much-loved public garden.

As Hamilton Gardens Director, you’ll champion the Gardens’ unique story, lead a team of 29 dedicated and passionate staff and spearhead the vision for the Gardens, balancing strategic and commercial activities that best meet the needs of our city, community and stakeholders.

Your work will continue raising the profile of Hamilton Gardens through effective communication and promotion. There’s plenty of opportunity for new business development and commercial development, and your keen business acumen and commercial nous will see best-in-industry business models and visitor strategies brought to life.

Excellent relationship skills and the ability to communicate and present at all levels are also a must. The Gardens have key relationships with external partners, sponsors and stakeholders which need to be fostered through regular engagement and reporting to ensure development is positive and ongoing.

From a technical perspective, you will bring to the role experience gained from your extensive career in parks and gardens at senior to executive level and specific visitor destination experience. You will have delivered large projects and be an expert in health and safety, particularly in identifying and controlling risks.

You’ll be practical and willing to roll up your sleeves, confident and secure in your ability to lead and deliver, and ready to bring passion and foresight to the next chapter of the Hamilton Gardens. We’re looking for a clear strategic thinker, a confident presenter, a strong communicator and an influencer.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity – if you think you have what it takes, we would love to hear from you!
