Are you committed to make moving, living and belonging in cities safer, more resilient, and more sustainable?

The Organisation

Townsville City Council is focused on ‘place making’ across the community to inspire people and to collectively re-imagine and reinvent public spaces. Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share; Council has a collaborative process in place to shape the public realm to maximise shared value. More than just promoting better urban design, they are facilitating creative patterns of use, paying attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define places across the city and support their ongoing evolution.

The Role

Public Open Space plays an important role in the community by providing places for exercise, quiet reflection, children’s play, and organised sport. As the Townsville community grows and changes, greater attention needs to be placed on the coordination around planning and design of Councils open space and irrigation solutions. Reporting to the Principal Lead for Open Space and Irrigation Planning, you will work at part of the team to create meaningful places, renew, and upgrade existing ones with the aim of enticing and attracting people to visit these and meeting both the current and future needs of the community. Finding solutions to challenges that make a difference to people’s lives will underpin everything you do.

The role is vacant due to an internal promotion and will enable you to utilise your strong decision-making skills in the delivery of landscape and streetscape projects as well as support a team of 3 with their project delivery and career progression

About You

If you are a motivated individual looking for a new challenge and have a passion to inspire others to value design excellence, place making and livability then this is an opportunity not to be missed.

Renowned for your leadership skills and as an enthusiastic advocate around the creation and enhancement of public open spaces you will have extensive knowledge of public space landscape architecture and/or urban development/planning and understand what is required to enhance communities. With the right combination of talent and energy underpinned by a commitment to operational excellence the position will suit an effective and decisive leader who has proven commercial acumen, highly developed stakeholder engagement skills and a strong focus on the benefit this role will bring to the community. Understandably you will be capable of working independently and leading a team through all stages from design through to construction.

Why this Role?

As the largest irrigation service provider in the Southern Hemisphere and with 400 Parks and 182 open spaces, joining Townsville City Council represents an opportunity to be a part of the team making Townsville a great PLACE ensuring meaningful public open spaces are created and enhanced.

For someone who is keen for a new challenge and perhaps a lifestyle change to tropical North Queensland this is a genuine opportunity to leverage and broaden your experience leading a team to enhance the Open Space portfolio with the largest regional Council in QLD.

You will be encouraged to have a growth mindset and will be given the space to develop personally and professionally, building a flexible career that works for you. This is a cohesive team with a committed and passionate leader who has been recognised for creating a positive and inclusive culture across this area of the business.

A salary of up to $118K + 13.5% Super + fortnightly RDO and generous relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate. Future Learning and Development opportunities are supported together with reimbursement of some professional registration fees.
