Private gardens along with the park lands are an essential part of Adelaide's lungs and it is therefore essential that the long term survival of gardens is ensured so Adelaide maintains the mantle of the garden city and its quality of life retained.

With the success of this session over the last three years, emphasis this year will be placed on garden design, eatable & Sustainable Gardens and environmentally friendly gardening.

Session One: Getting started in the Garden

Kim Syrus – Local Garden Guru

All the great tips and ideas on starting a new garden or rejuvenating an existing one, from getting the soil right to selecting the plants that will do well, all this and more.

Session Two: Eatable and Sustainable Gardens

Jenny Bates and Pam Gunnell – Lochiel Park Community Garden

Jenny and Pam from the Lochiel Park Community Garden will talk about how to design and plan a sustainable fruit and vegetable garden. Topics covered will include: finding a suitable site, water use, how to improve your soil, composting, encouraging beneficial insects, using organic solutions for pest and disease problems, seed saving, and making the whole thing easy and fun, all within a framework of design based on Permaculture principles. There will be time for questions, so come prepared!

Session Three: Bio-diverse Backyards and Corridors

Geoff Booth – Urban Biodiversity Project Officer

Outline of the Urban Biodiversity Unit (DENR) ‘Backyards for Wildlife’ program & the advantages of creating a biodiverse garden in your own urban setting, plus an overview of the City of Salisbury Biodiversity Corridors & Seed Production Areas.

Session Four: Environmentally Responsible Gardening

Mark Caldicott – Norwood Garden Centre, 5AA garden show

An introduction to being an environmentally responsible gardener will help you, whether you have an existing garden or are starting from scratch.

From working with your soil, water availability and micro-climate, to pest & disease management without the use of harsh chemicals. By simple observations and planning your garden can be what you want, whether as a food forest for your family, or to restore the Biodiversity in your own backyard for the benefit of local wildlife and insects. This talk will deal with organic, environmentally responsible solutions and methods to get your garden to be an asset to yourself and the environment.
